Dreaming Wide Awake (A Song)
Dreaming Wide Awake
Chorus:
I’ve been dreaming wide awake,
Been playing movies in my sleep,
Giving more than I could ever take,
Holding smiles when sorrow will surely weep,
Protesting truth and faith in the unseen,
Writing accountability into a future’s date,
One where the grass is a brighter sort of green,
Wedged in-between spikes of love and hate.
Where will I go between this real and pretend,
When my head hits the pillow goodnight,
Before my feet hit the floor ready to defend,
Take a good look around with losing sight,
Hoping that tomorrow will be a little brighter,
Praying that I have tricked myself too much,
Lose a little baggage & become somehow lighter,
Let go of the past that has made the now this such.
God knows that I’ve never been too religious,
But right now I find my knees hitting the floor,
Trying to find some faith outside of “us”,
And a little bit of conviction with what I ignore,
You are right to ask who am I to judge,
When I can’t be honest with my own heart,
And even when I am you know I’ll never budge,
This life’s full of the ending equivalent to the start.
This gate is the wall I have built around me,
With spaces only big enough to fit through at surface,
I may have been a little too weak to see,
And God knows I am too stubborn to ever confess,
Right now I am reaching out for anything,
But no one seems to care if they hear my call,
Afraid less of what the future may bring,
For it’s the now that makes me feel so small.
I’ve been holding onto hope for so long,
That those words would utter from your lips,
So why do I feel so tainted- oh so wrong,
Peaceful thinking of water beneath sinking ships,
I’ve been dreaming wide awake,
Been playing movies in my sleep,
Giving more than I could ever take,
Holding smiles when sorrow will surely weep,
Where will sorrow play for keeps?
